The experience in Crystal River, Florida was exactly what we needed to disconnect a bit and reconnect with nature. This corner of the state is known for its crystal-clear waters, its manatees, and that peaceful atmosphere that invites you to slow down. We stayed two nights so we could have one full day in the area, although honestly, by the end we felt that one extra night would have been ideal to enjoy everything at a more relaxed pace. Visiting Crystal River is one of those experiences I recommend often—and even I’m left wanting to go back again.
In this post, I’ll share how our manatee experience was, a bit about where we stayed, and other activities and places to explore in the area.

Where to stay in Crystal River
We stayed at Plantation Resort on Crystal River, a simple but pleasant hotel—perfect if you’re looking for something practical and well located. The resort has access to canals that give the place a very relaxed feel. While walking around the area, we saw several boat tours, both for spring excursions and water activities. It’s one of those places where simply taking a walk already feels like part of the experience.

Swimming (or floating) with manatees
We dedicated our full day in Crystal River, Florida to one of the most special experiences of the trip: swimming, I actually would say “floating” with manatees. We took a tour with River Ventures. They felt extremely professional and very respectful of these animals. We learned so much with them. I like to clarify the word “floating” because the idea here is not to chase them or actively swim. To avoid stressing them and to protect their habitat, the best thing to do is to stay floating on the water, without kicking or making sudden movements. Don’t forget to watch the video at the end of this post where you can see all the manatees we encountered on this little getaway.

This tour was very complete, well organized, and educational. They even include the wetsuit, fins, snorkels, and floatation devices. Experiences like this are truly a must when you’re in Florida. Without a doubt, it’s one of the best ways to enjoy an authentic Crystal River experience while connecting with nature in a responsible way. I’d love to do it again soon.

Other activities in the area
After the tour, we went back to the hotel to shower and change quickly. It was December and the sun sets early, so we headed back out to enjoy the last rays of the day. We went to Fort Island Beach, a small and quiet beach that’s perfect for watching the sunset. It’s not the typical endless white-sand beach, but it has its own charm—especially in the evening, when everything turns golden and the atmosphere becomes incredibly calm. For the season and for my taste, the water was obviously very cold.

The next morning, before heading home, we stopped at Crystal River Archaeological State Park. This park protects one of the most important archaeological sites in Florida, featuring ancient mounds built by Indigenous communities thousands of years ago. It’s a short but interesting visit—perfect to close out the trip with a historical touch and learn a bit more about the region.

Very close to Crystal River, you’ll also find places that are absolutely worth visiting, such as Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park and Three Sisters Springs. Both are very popular, especially Three Sisters Springs, one of the most famous springs for spotting manatees during the winter. That’s exactly why we felt that adding one more night to our itinerary would have been perfect—to explore these spots without rushing.
About 30 minutes south by car is Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. This park is famous for its mermaid show, a tradition that’s been around for more than 60 years and takes place inside a natural spring with crystal-clear waters. The park also has a small water park integrated into the natural surroundings, making it ideal for cooling off during the warmer months. And of course, don’t miss the opportunity to kayak and enjoy the Weeki Wachee River. It’s a perfect stop to complement your visit and continue exploring the natural beauty of this part of the state.

How to get to Crystal River
Crystal River, Florida is very well located for a road-trip getaway. From Orlando, it’s about a 1 hour and 45 minute drive, while from Tampa it’s roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes. It’s a very manageable distance for a multi-day trip and easy to include on a road trip through the central-west part of the state.

Crystal River felt like an ideal destination if you’re looking for nature, unique experiences, and a relaxed atmosphere away from the noise of big cities. It’s definitely one of those places that makes you want to come back… but next time, with one extra night on the plan.

Would you visit Crystal River and “float” with manatees? Another great option is exploring the area by kayak, without getting into the water, and enjoying the scenery at a slower pace. Would you like to discover other magical corners of Florida like this one?
