The Tamiami Trail is one of Florida’s most scenic and interesting routes. This historic highway, also known in some areas as US41, crosses the Everglades, offering travelers a unique opportunity to venture into the heart of one of the most iconic ecosystems in the United States. If you’re visiting Miami, just a few minutes north via the famous Calle Ocho, you can explore part of the Everglades and learn about the local native culture. It’s a different kind of experience when getting to know Tamiami Trail in South Florida.
As you begin your drive, you’ll come across the Miccosukee Casino & Resort, an iconic destination that combines entertainment, culture, and comfort. This resort is managed by the Miccosukee Tribe, a Native American community with deep roots in the region. The property not only offers a casino but also features restaurants, a spa, and a pool perfect for relaxation. Even if you’re not staying there, you can still enjoy the casino, dining options, and special events held throughout the year, making it an interesting stop for those exploring Tamiami Trail.
Continuing your journey along Tamiami Trail, you’ll find several exciting stops, from airboat tours to native reservations where you can learn more about the culture of Florida’s Indigenous peoples. On our last visit, we decided to explore one of the most fascinating spots along this route: the Miccosukee Indian Village. While exploring Tamiami Trail, you’ll realize there are plenty of other options to discover and enjoy.
A Bit More About Tamiami Trail
The Tamiami Trail is a nearly 300-mile highway that stretches from Miami to Tampa. It crosses part of the Everglades, and you’ll find numerous places to stop, each offering a unique experience.
A common and highly recommended activity in the area is taking an airboat tour. These high-speed boats glide over the water, giving you incredible views of the surrounding landscape. The ride can be quite loud with strong winds, so be prepared. I suggest wearing sunscreen, perhaps polarized sunglasses (they help you spot alligators or fish more easily), and many tours provide ear protection — though bringing your own is always a good idea. Avoid carrying items that can easily blow away.
During the tour, guides often point out alligators resting on the banks or calmly swimming in the waters. Several companies offer tours along Tamiami Trail, and some even provide nighttime experiences where you can see alligators in action at sunset.
Of course, spotting the famous alligators is almost guaranteed. The Everglades are home to one of the largest alligator populations in the country, and along Tamiami Trail, you’ll see these impressive reptiles in their natural habitat. Even without boarding an airboat, there are several designated observation points where you can frequently spot alligators lounging near the water or peeking their eyes above the surface. Additionally, some stops offer alligator shows where locals share fascinating facts about these creatures.
A Cultural Stop: The Miccosukee Indian Village
Among all the stops along Tamiami Trail, one of the most enriching is the Miccosukee Indian Village. This site, managed by the Miccosukee Tribe, offers visitors a chance to learn about the history, traditions, and culture of this Indigenous group that has inhabited the region for centuries. I really enjoyed stopping here and learning more about the area, its people, and their heritage.
- Miccosukee Museum
At the Miccosukee Indian Village museum, you’ll find exhibits featuring historical artifacts, traditional clothing, and tools used by the tribe. It’s fascinating to learn about the Miccosukee’s history and how they adapted to thrive in Florida’s wetlands. - Cultural Demonstrations
One of the highlights of the visit is witnessing traditional skills demonstrations, such as basket weaving and wood carving. Tribe members proudly showcase these crafts and are often happy to answer questions about their history and traditions. - Alligators Shows
The alligator shows at the Miccosukee Indian Village are a main attraction. Here, you can watch native handlers interact with these powerful creatures, demonstrating techniques that have been passed down for generations to coexist safely with alligators. I was amazed by their skills and knowledge. - Gift Shop
The gift shop at the Miccosukee Indian Village is perfect for purchasing souvenirs while supporting the community. You’ll find handmade items such as traditional jewelry, artwork, and other unique keepsakes.
Location and Distances
The Miccosukee Indian Village is located approximately one hour by car from downtown Miami. If you’re traveling from other major Florida cities:
- From Miami: About 1 hr.
- From Fort Lauderdale: About 1 hr and 20 min.
- From Naples: About 2hrs.
While getting to know Tamiami Trail, you not only get the chance to immerse yourself in the Everglades’ natural beauty but also to discover the rich culture of Florida’s Indigenous communities. A drive along this historic highway, including a stop at the Miccosukee Indian Village, is a unique and educational experience that offers a different side of the state. From the thrill of spotting alligators to learning about the Miccosukee way of life, this journey has so much to offer.
