When I lived in South Florida, whenever I had the chance I would just jump in the car and drive wherever I felt like going that day :). Sometimes I’d head down to the Keys, other times up toward Boca or West Palm Beach. The truth is, there are so many incredible places near Miami that let you completely change the scenery in just a few hours. From wild nature to elegant coastal towns, these destinations are perfect for a half-day outing or a relaxing day trip without having to drive too far. It all depends on how much you want to drive and what kind of atmosphere you’re in the mood for. Here are a few great day trips near Miami.

Everglades National Park (about 1 hr)
One of the most unique ecosystems in the world is practically next door to Miami. You can explore short trails, take an airboat ride in areas around the park, or simply walk along the famous Anhinga Trail, where it’s very common to see the well-known alligators and plenty of birds up close.

Tip: Go early in the morning or near sunset to avoid the strong heat and to see more wildlife.
Key Largo (about 1 hour – 1h 20)
The first island of the Florida Keys already has that relaxed tropical atmosphere people imagine when they think about a quick getaway. Here you can enjoy lunch by the water, go kayaking, snorkeling, or simply relax while taking in the turquoise ocean views. Don’t miss visiting John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which is absolutely beautiful. Another pleasant and free park to visit is Rowell’s Waterfront Park.

Fun fact: Key Largo is known as the “Diving Capital of the World.”
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens (about 1 hr)
This place surprises many people because it feels like you’ve left Florida and stepped into Japan. The gardens are designed with different traditional styles, there are peaceful walking paths, and a very interesting cultural museum. It’s perfect for a slow stroll and to disconnect for a while. For me, it’s one of those places I never get tired of visiting, and whenever I can, I take friends who haven’t been yet 🙂 Here you can read more about this beautiful spot to visit.

Tip: Bring water and sunscreen, since much of the visit is outdoors.
Jupiter (about 1h 45)
A beautiful coastal area with a calmer vibe than Miami. One of the nicest spots is Dubois Park, where the water is usually calm and perfect for relaxing. Try to arrive early because parking is limited, especially on weekends when it fills up quickly. You can also see the iconic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse nearby. Just a few steps away you’ll also find the beach, which is stunning. Here’s a little more about this area.

Fun fact: The Jupiter lighthouse is one of the most photographed in Florida. (Main photo)
Palm Beach (about 1h 30)
Elegant, beautiful, and perfect for a few hours of walking. The famous Worth Avenue features Mediterranean-style architecture, hidden courtyards, and plenty of art galleries. Even if you’re not planning to shop, it’s still a lovely place to stroll around.

Tip: Combine your visit with some time at the nearby beach.
Naples (about 2 hours)
Yes, it may feel a bit far for some people, especially if you don’t love driving. You can get there from Miami via the scenic Tamiami Trail for a more leisurely drive, or take Alligator Alley (the toll section of Interstate 75), where you’ll find several spots to stop and see the famous alligators. On Florida’s west coast, Naples has a different charm with a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere. Walking around downtown, enjoying lunch, and ending the day at Naples Pier to watch the sunset makes for a perfect plan.
Fun fact: It’s one of the best places in Florida to spot dolphins from the shore.
Florida has so much more to offer beyond its most famous cities, and the best part is that many of these places are relatively close to Miami — perfect for changing the scenery without too much planning. Sometimes all it takes is a short drive to discover completely different corners.
