Downtown Daytona Beach: A Walk Through History, Coffee Shops & River Views

When we think about Daytona Beach, the first things that usually come to mind are its famous beach, NASCAR races, or Daytona International Speedway. But if you ask me, there’s another part of the city that deserves a visit too: Downtown Daytona Beach.

The atmosphere here feels completely different. Instead of the busy beach scene, you’ll find a pleasant walk along the Halifax River, small gardens, museums, coffee shops, art galleries, and local stores that invite you to slow down and explore.

It’s a great way to spend a morning or afternoon while discovering a different side of Daytona Beach. I’ve visited Daytona Beach so many times, but most of the time it’s been all about the beach—and I’m definitely not complaining about that! 🙂 But every now and then, it’s nice to explore a little more.

Start Your Day With a Good Coffee

Every good walk should start with coffee… at least that’s how it works for me.

My first stop was Copperline Coffee, a cozy coffee shop located on South Beach Street.

Since it was pretty hot that day, I ordered a cold mocha and a slice of banana bread that was honestly delicious. It was the perfect breakfast before starting my walk around the area.

If you enjoy discovering local coffee shops when you travel, just like I do :), this is definitely worth a stop.

Riverfront Park: A Relaxing Stroll Along the River

With coffee in hand, I crossed over to Riverfront Park, one of those places that immediately feels peaceful.

The walkway along the Halifax River is very pleasant, with walking paths, gardens, benches where you can sit for a while, and beautiful views of the water.

While walking around, I came across the Splash Pad, a water play area that I’m sure is a favorite for kids, especially during the summer months when Florida’s heat doesn’t give us much of a break.

It’s one of those places where you can sit down for a few minutes and enjoy the view… or somehow end up staying much longer than you planned.

Riverfront Park sits along the Halifax River, part of Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway system, a large network of waterways along the state’s Atlantic coast.

Visit the Halifax Historical Museum

If you enjoy learning a little about the history of the places you visit, don’t skip the Halifax Historical Museum. It’s not a very large museum, but I found it really interesting.

Besides the exhibits about the history of the area, the building itself has plenty of character. It was originally used as a bank and still has several of its original details.

One of the things that caught my attention was the beautiful artwork on the walls. I was told during my visit that some of the paintings were created especially for the bank by a father and his son. They include a map of Florida and scenes representing the state’s natural landscapes.

It’s one of those small museums that can end up being much more interesting than you expected.

The Rose Garden

Continuing my walk through Riverfront Park, I came across the Rose Garden, a lovely section of the park.

The small fountains, flowers, and peaceful atmosphere make it a nice little spot to sit for a few minutes or take some photos.

It’s not a huge garden, but it adds a lot of charm to the walk.

The Story of Brownie

One of the spots that made me curious was the memorial dedicated to Brownie.

Before visiting, I didn’t know his story, and I thought it was really sweet that the city continues to remember this beloved dog with a small monument.

It’s one of those unexpected little details that gives a place even more personality.

More to Discover Along South Beach Street

After exploring the park, I continued walking along South Beach Street.

Here you’ll find small antique shops, art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and local businesses that make this area fun to explore.

You don’t really need a strict itinerary. Part of the fun is simply walking around, popping into a shop that catches your eye, or stopping to look at the displays along the way.

If you visit in the afternoon, there’s also a marina nearby where you can take a dinner cruise along the river. We did it a few years ago, and it was a really nice experience.

Fun fact: Did you know the Halifax River isn’t really a river in the traditional sense? It is part of the Intracoastal Waterway, a navigable waterway system that runs along much of the East Coast of the United States.

Depending on where you are, different sections have different names. Here in Daytona Beach, it’s known as the Halifax River. Farther south, you’ll hear the name Indian River, and near Merritt Island, it becomes the Banana River.

They’re all part of the larger Intracoastal Waterway system.

End Your Morning With a Waterfront Lunch

After walking through the park, visiting the museum, and exploring South Beach Street, we decided to have lunch at Caribbean Jack’s, a laid-back restaurant right by the water.

I ordered a mahi-mahi sandwich, and it was really delicious.

But besides the food, what I enjoyed most was the atmosphere. There are outdoor tables overlooking the marina, music, and that tropical feeling that makes you want to stay a little longer and enjoy the moment. As I told my husband, “I want to come back and just relax with a piña colada.” 🙂

A Few Tips for Your Visit

If you’re planning to explore this part of Daytona Beach, here are a few tips:

  • Go in the morning if possible. The temperatures are usually more comfortable, and you can enjoy the local coffee shops before starting your walk.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The distances aren’t huge, but you’ll probably do quite a bit of walking.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, and sunglasses, especially if you’re visiting during the summer.
  • Allow about two to four hours to enjoy the park, visit the museum, and explore South Beach Street without rushing.

Much More Than a Beach Town

Don’t get me wrong… Daytona Beach is always worth visiting for the beach. But if you have a few extra hours during your trip, I definitely recommend stepping away from the sand for a little while and discovering Downtown Daytona Beach.

Between a good cup of coffee, a relaxing walk along the river, an interesting little museum, beautiful gardens, and local businesses, you’ll get to experience a completely different side of the city.

And who knows… maybe you’ll end up like me, realizing that one of the best parts of your visit was the part you weren’t expecting.
