Edison & Ford Winter Estates

If you are in Miami you can do a day trip to visit this city. It’s 2 1/2 hours from Miami, 2 hours from Ft. Laurderdale, but a large part of this is a drive by “Alligator Alley” that runs through part of the Everglades, where you can see alligators and enjoy a different view.

In Fort Myers, located in the southwest of the state, you can visit Henry Ford’s and Thomas Edison’s houses. So you will also learn a little more about their inventions such as cars and electronics from them.

Those were their houses, one next to the other, during winter time. Edison’s estate (the Seminole Lodge) was first built in 1886 and then Ford’s in 1915. Although Ford bought the house in 1916 and named it The Mangoes.

The place is very nice to visit and relax walking around the garden. The Edison Botanical Garden has more than a thousand species and varieties of plants from around the world.

So it is not just a few houses that you are going to see, also enjoy the garden, museum and even a laboratory.

If you want to make this trip as a part of a vacation for few days, just minutes away you have beautiful beaches of Fort Myers (about 20min from the museum), Sanibel Island (30min) and Captiva (50min).
