Things to do in Tampa Bay: beaches, history, and unforgettable getaways

If you’re planning to visit Florida’s west coast, there are so many things to do in Tampa Bay beyond just beaches and theme parks. This area includes cities like Tampa, St. Petersburg, and several coastal towns, each with a completely different vibe.

Personally, this is one of my favorite areas in Florida because you can spend the morning walking around a downtown full of murals and coffee shops, end the afternoon at the beach, and finish the day watching the sunset by the water. Not bad at all, right?

If it’s your first time visiting Tampa Bay, here are some places and activities that are truly worth adding to your trip.

Stroll around historic Ybor City

One of the first places I always recommend is Ybor City. This historic neighborhood has an interesting mix of history, Cuban culture, and lots of personality.

Between the brick streets, old buildings, and roosters freely walking around the sidewalks (yes, really), it’s the perfect place to wander around without rushing. While you’re there, grab an authentic Cuban sandwich or a Cuban-style coffee while exploring the area.

At night, the atmosphere becomes even more lively, especially on weekends.

Experience the thrills at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

If you love roller coasters and theme parks, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is pretty much a must.

What I really like about this park is how it mixes intense rides with zoo-style areas and safari experiences. One minute you’re on a crazy roller coaster, and five minutes later you’re quietly watching giraffes. Very Florida, honestly.

If you visit during summer, try to arrive early because the heat here is no joke.

Relax at Clearwater Beach

When people think about beaches around Tampa Bay, one of the most famous is Clearwater Beach.

White sand, calm water, and tons of restaurants nearby make it perfect for spending the entire day, especially if it’s your first time visiting Florida’s west coast.

My advice: get there early because parking fills up very quickly, especially on weekends and during summer.

Explore Downtown St. Petersburg

One of my favorite spots in the area is downtown St. Petersburg.

It has a relaxed but lively atmosphere, full of restaurants, bars, local shops, murals, and waterfront walking areas. Honestly, it’s one of those places where you say, “Let’s stay just a little while”… and suddenly hours have passed.

You’ll also find great museums like The Dalí Museum if you enjoy art. Definitely worth visiting!

Enjoy St. Pete Beach

Very close to downtown, you’ll find St. Pete Beach, another super popular beach with a more laid-back vibe.

Here you can simply relax by the ocean, walk along the sand, or enjoy one of the waterfront restaurants or bars. The sunsets around this area are stunning and yes… you’ll probably end up taking way too many photos.

Escape to Fort De Soto Park

If you prefer something quieter and more natural, Fort De Soto Park is an excellent option. The park has beautiful beaches, bike paths, nature trails, and even a historic fort. It’s also very popular for kayaking and picnics.

I think it’s the perfect place if you want to escape the more touristy atmosphere while still staying close to everything.

Stroll around John’s Pass Village

If you want a mix of beach-town vibes, shops, restaurants, and beautiful water views, you definitely have to visit John’s Pass Village. Located in Madeira Beach, it has that relaxed west coast Florida atmosphere. You can walk along the boardwalk, browse souvenir shops, eat seafood, or simply sit and watch the boats go by.

Boat tours also leave from here, including dolphin-watching excursions, which are extremely popular with visitors. And yes… it’s one of those places where you say, “Let’s stop for just a minute,” and somehow end up staying way longer.

Learn a little local history

Another interesting stop is the Tampa Bay History Center.

Here you can learn more about the area’s history, from indigenous roots to the cigar industry and even Florida’s pirate era. Yes, Florida definitely has some interesting stories.

It’s also a great activity if the weather isn’t cooperating or you need a break from the heat.

Explore Tampa from the water

A fun and different way to see the city is by taking the Pirate Water Taxi. It travels along parts of the Hillsborough River and lets you hop on and off near several major attractions. Plus, the city views from the water are really beautiful.

Tips for visiting Tampa Bay for the first time

One thing many people underestimate is the traffic between cities, especially during high season. Even when places look “close” on the map, beaches, bridges, and traffic can make the drive longer than expected.

I also recommend splitting your trip by areas. For example, spend one day exploring Tampa and another day around St. Petersburg and the nearby beaches. You’ll enjoy more and drive less.

And of course… don’t forget sunscreen. Even on cloudy days, the Florida sun always finds a way to remind you it exists.
