Visiting Crab Island in Destin, Florida, is an unforgettable experience that combines fun, beautiful landscapes and crystal clear waters. After having this destination on my bucket list since 2002, I finally got to experience this adventure and would definitely do it again! With this guide I invite you to visit Crab Island in Destin.
Our Crab Island Experience
We made a reservation with Destin Pontoon Charters. They offer 4 boat options, each depending on the size of your group. We took a non-private tour that is up to 22 people, I think we were 18 people at the time. The tour lasts approximately 3 hours, with a full two hours to enjoy Crab Island and a 30-minute dolphin watching cruise in the harbor. Obviously it is not safe for you to see dolphins, remember that they are in their natural habitat, but with luck you will be able to see them. We managed to see some in the port area before heading towards Crab Island.
From the moment we got on board, the atmosphere was a total party. The staff was incredibly friendly and you could tell they knew the area very well. The loud music made everything feel like a celebration on the water. If you are looking for a calm and silent experience, it is important to take this detail into account. However, if you love a fun and lively atmosphere, this tour is perfect! If you are looking for something quieter, without a party, perhaps a private tour will be the best option.
Activities and Amenities
One of the best things about the tour is that it comes with everything you need to enjoy it to the fullest:
- Paddleboards (3 available, shared equipment)
- Snorkeling equipment (shared equipment)
- Inflatable “Lily Pad” to relax in the water
- Life jackets for adults and children
- Bottled water and a cooler with ice to keep your drinks cold
Additionally, the ride includes incredible views of Destin Harbor, Choctawhatchee Bay, and of course, Crab Island, which is the main point of the tour.
I went with my husband, for 2 people we brought 2 cans of sodas, a small container with fruits that we bought at the supermarket the day before and 2 cans of beer (yes, you can bring them) and we were able to store it in the cooler that they offer without problems. Of course we brought our beach bag with towels and our wallets that stayed on the boat without problems while we enjoyed the water. Also if you want, you can ‘walk’ (it’s a sandbar after all lol) or swim to a boat that it is in the area that sells floats, drinks, snacks and even souvenirs that say Crab Island (which I couldn’t find in other places outside of Crab Island).
You will also find some little boats going between the boats selling drinks and other things.
Tips for Visiting Crab Island
- Grab the Earlier tour: We chose the first tour of the day (8:30 a.m.), and it was an excellent decision. Upon arrival, the water was super clear and calm, perfect for swimming and relaxing. Hours change depending on the season. For example, in summer there are 3 schedules while in spring there are 2 and it starts at 10am.
- Pay attention to Jellyfish: We noticed that towards the end of the morning, small jellyfish began to appear. Although it wasn’t a serious problem, it’s something worth keeping in mind if you plan on swimming for a long time. They touched me twice (leaving my skin itching for a little while) but nothing happened to my husband. It’s a matter of being attentive.
- Sun Protection and Appropriate Clothing: Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, hats and towels. Although there are spots to rest on the boat, you will be exposed to the sun most of the time.
Back in 2002, I was with my family in New Orleans and on our way back to Tampa Bay (where I lived at the time) we passed through the area and it caught my attention. For some reason, it reminded me a little of some beaches in Venezuela. Since then, Crab Island has always been on my bucket list, so when we decided to go to Destin I told my husband “Crab Island is a must!” Truly, visiting and spending a morning on Crab Island was incredible: crystal clear waters, a relaxing and fun atmosphere, and landscapes that seem straight out of a postcard. Would I return? Yeah! Many times more.
If you are looking for a mix of adventure, fun and nature, a trip to Crab Island is an experience you cannot miss. I’m already dreaming of a next visit! 🙂
